If they are awake and alert....

  2.  Ask simple questions
    1. Test their blood sugar, if you or they can.
    2. If >200, they need fast- acting insulin to bring sugar down.
    3. If < 50, they need sugar (tablet, soda)
    4. Don't give them too much sugar.
    5. If they have a pump and can bolus or suspend let them do this if they can. Help if they ask.

If they are NOT awake or alert....

  1. Call 911
  2. Stay with them.

** Do not administer insulin or other treatments.  Wait for EMS.

Medic Alert Bracelet:  This gives a name, address, and the person's condietions so EMS is aware. Online retailers sell these.

Glucagon:  This is a hormone your pancreas makes to regulate sugars. It increases blood sugar and prevents it from dropping too low. Have the diabetic ask their doctor for a Rx in case they  become unconscious and can't help themselves.  You should learn how to use this in an emergency.
